In Memory of Pete Morey
Disc'n Dude #10 • Forever Loved, Never Forgotten
Pete • Forever Loved • Never Forgotten
May 4, 2019
Dear Friends,
Peter died May 2, 2017, and my birthday is May 4. I spent my 75th birthday planning Pete's funeral and memorial service. I have never made a big deal about birthdays, but since Pete's passing, I have vowed to do something to remember his life and legacy on my birthday. I considered a memorial picture in the newspaper. This would reach thousands, but I wanted something more intimate, personal, and directed to those who knew and loved him. I decided to put Pete's picture on a disc (memorial disc), as he was a Dude in good standing! Pete on top of the finest disc money could buy, top of the line on "the Cadillac of all discs"! However, the realities of life intervened as it always does. My "Cadillac class disc" turned into a disc that can best be compared to a "plastic dinner plate"!
Humbled, I still feel a disc is an appropriate symbolic vehicle for Pete's memorial. The quality of Pete's life, legacy, and impact on the lives of those who knew and loved him more than compensates for the dinner plate disc. Creating the dialogue (letter) and disc was positive, healthy, and healing. Thank you for your gift of participation in fulfilling my birthday goal!

The Memorial Bench
The Disc'n Dudes received a heartfelt thank-you letter from Pete's family accompanied by an award Lynn created for each of us. The award was modeled after one of Pete's many, many awards. We have copies of the letter and an award for each of you.
The bench with memorial plaque is installed on hole #1 at Oakwood Disc Golf Course in Cottage Grove. We had a dedication ceremony set for Sunday afternoon August 6. Pete's family was notified and we hoped they could make it for the dedication.
Donations to defray the cost were accepted by Brent #42. The dedication was followed by a round of disc golf at Pete's home course.
The willingness to step up, and the compassion shown by all the Dudes makes me very proud to be a part of this great group of guys known as the Disc'n Dudes.
Pete Morey Memorial Bench Rededication
October 8, 2020, 5:30 sharp
Held in conjunction with the second Fall Fun Round at Oakwood. Round of disc golf to honor Pete followed the rededication of the newly restored bench. Feel free to share memories of our dear friend at this time. Brent #42 stepped up and did the planning and hard work to complete this project. As you can see, it is beautiful.

About My Good Friend
I met Pete 12 years ago and was his friend from the time I met him. That was Pete, an instant friend. I started the disc golf league while Pete played in it for 12 years, the Disc'n Dudes being what it is today. His sense of humor was a big part of the group's identity. Pete's competitive spirit was contagious. Pete came up with the idea for the road trip and organized the first one. It has become an annual event that we all look forward to.
Thanks, Pete Morey, for many awards. Attendance award was one he worked hard to earn and of course won it most years. Pete was always there ready to play even when no one else was. Disc, that's enthusiasm. Pete played some golf, night golf, star golf in the winter, in the rain, in the freezing rain, in the heat.
That's enthusiasm! Pete sponsored many new players and gave an enthusiastic welcome and encouragement to all new players. Whenever Pete went out of town, he'd always find a course to play and send us pictures and a critique.
Pete was my rock, my right-hand man. He would volunteer to help before I even asked, he'd say "no worries." I knew I could count on him to fill in for me when I was out of town. He saved one of the Dude's life by getting him to the hospital in the nick of time, when he had a severe allergic reaction. Another time he took a Dude to the ER when he almost severed his hands. Pete was always there to jump in and lend a hand.
Once a life, Pete earned the title Serving Thing, because he would wade into the muckiest pond and retrieve discs for everyone. One year, "let it go," he'd say, "no worries," as disc left behind. He also earned the title Golf Master because he volunteered to help with pro events at Lakewood.
I've had many of the Dudes come up to me and say "you know what, Pete was a nice dude" and yes I agree and that was Pete, he made everyone feel he was a special friend. I'm going to miss his "it's going to rain, let's win some trophies." I'm going to miss hearing him teach his wife his putting style. I'm going to miss that laugh. I'm going to miss him for a very long time, and I'm sure I'm not alone. Dude, rest in peace.
The Disc'n Dudes are planning to dedicate a bench in Pete's memory at his home disc golf course in Cottage Grove.
